More than 30 percent of American adults have some form of periodontal disease, or gum disease, and many may not even know it.
"The early signs of gum disease are gums that bleed easily or are red and swollen," said Dr. Jonathan C. Okabe, of Okabe Dental Arts. Taking care of ones gums is not only important for dental health, but general health, as well.
Recent research suggests a link between gum disease and other health problems. Evidence shows that bacteria in the mouth associated with gum disease may be linked to heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Studies also show that women with advanced gum disease may be more likely to have an underweight or premature baby.
But there's good news in most cases gum disease can be prevented or treated with proper oral hygiene and regular professional care.
"Professional cleanings are the only way to remove calculus on your teeth above and under the gum line," explained Okabe. "Good oral care is an important part of a healthy lifestyle, which includes eating a balanced diet and exercising."
Since 1976, Dr. Okabe and his staff at Okabe Dental Arts have offered leading-edge dentistry combined with its "patient-first" philosophy. "Patient first" means getting to know clients and delivering personalized attention. It's the first step in helping patients improve their dental health. And that means improving and maintaining their overall health, too.
Okabe Dental Arts is conveniently located at 1221 Kapiolani Blvd., Suite 620, at the corner of Pensacola and Kapiolani. Call 596-0837 to make an appointment for a "masterpiece smile."
